As the year comes to a close, I’m reflecting on what has been a stimulating and transformative 2024 in my art journey. This year has brought opportunities I never imagined, from exhibiting my work in new spaces to connecting with inspiring artists and experimenting with new materials and techniques.

2024: A Transformative Year on My Art Journey

The year began with a pivotal moment during a visit to Skipton Town Hall. I called in early in 2024 to inquire about opportunities for local artists and received an encouraging email from Megan Hickes, Exhibitions Curator. She introduced me to the Craven Arts group and the Creative Craven Network, which became a gateway to a wealth of opportunities. One of the highlights of the year was being selected to exhibit two of my oil paintings in the Emerging Artists Exhibition 2024 at Skipton Town Hall. Seeing my work displayed alongside so many talented artists was a humbling but satisfying experience.

Professional Development and New Horizons

Ways of Drawing

I embraced professional development opportunities through Craven Arts, starting with a thought-provoking presentation by Brian Hindmarch, followed by a six-week course called Ways of Drawing. Brian’s knowledge and encouragement inspired me to explore further into my creative practice.

I also became an active member of Craven Arts’ Monday morning meetings, which have been invaluable for learning and connecting with fellow artists. The discussions have ranged from exploring unique media like gold leaf and scraperboard to practical advice on materials and exhibitions. I also seized the chance to try stone carving for the first time. This sense of community inspired me to exhibit my work in the Spring Exhibition at Craven Arts House in Skipton.

Craven Arts also introduced me to the Gargrave Art Group, where I’ve explored themes I wouldn’t typically choose, using the monthly subjects as opportunities to experiment with new media and creative expression. Participating in the Gargrave Exhibition 2024 Members Gallery  was another highlight of my year.

Returning to Life Drawing

Building on the foundation of an Introduction to Life Drawing course with Tessa Houghton in 2023, I joined two excellent courses with Ellie Andrews at the Leeds Drawing Club in 2024. A three-week life drawing course and a one-evening portrait session reignited my passion for figurative art. Ellie’s supportive environment and the untutored sessions provide a welcoming space for practice, and the  encouragement from fellow artists has been inspiring.

Reaching New Audiences

In 2024, I was pleased to see my work exhibited in new spaces. A visit to the Look Gallery in Helmsley introduced me to Hillary, who now displays three of my paintings at the gallery.

Another exciting experience came through The Home Company in Skipton, where I joined five other artists for an evening exhibition. This was my first time sharing my art in a public setting, and the feedback I received was encouraging and motivating.

Digital Growth and Future Plans

This year also saw the launch of my online Gallery through the app Webarto, created by Eustachio Di Paola. This platform has been instrumental in presenting my work professionally without taking time away from my art practice. It’s also allowed me to share updates like this newsletter—thank you, Eustachio!

As I look to 2025, I’m excited to continue developing my new body of work. Inspired by the Yorkshire Dales and a night scene of Aix-en-Provence, this collection will reflect my ongoing passion for capturing the world around me. I hope to share it with  you in exhibitions late in 2025.

Reflecting on 2024, I’m grateful for the opportunities, connections, and growth this year has brought. From exhibiting my work in new spaces to exploring new subjects and techniques, this year has been about stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing new challenges.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey—friends, mentors, fellow artists, and organisations. Your encouragement has made this year unforgettable. Here’s to a creative and inspiring 2025 for us all!

Warm regards,

Jonathan Little
